[Manuscript] A newsy letter, signed by the Scottish M.P., Henry Home Drummond, dated London, 7 July 1840. The subject matter ranges from political news and tactics to recent marriages. He has had communications with Mr. Gordon about the case of Janet Maclaren. He believes the Scotch Prisons bill and other Scottish bills “that we have been waiting for an opportunity to oppose will not come on at all. A Regency bill is to be brought in, but Ld Melbourne & the Duke I believe have agreed that Prince Albert shall be the Regent”. Drummond expresses satisfaction with his eldest son’s marriage to Miss Hay of Dunse Castle, while James Campbell called on him two days ago to inform him of his marriage to Miss Bromley, “an English lady, daughter to Sir – Bromley, without any money”. The recipient of the letter is not named in the text.  Small 8vo; 7 sides on paper, in very good condition. 15 pounds
