Berkshire Protestations Index (1641/2)

Searches can be made in our specialist index of Berkshire Protestation returns. Males over the age of 18 were required to take the Oath of Protestation. The index comprises about 10,000 slips and covers the old county of Berkshire, which included parts of what is now Oxfordshire. Returns have survived for 100 of the 160 odd parishes. There are large gaps in the east of the county and the north-west corner.

The information includes name, and place where the oath was taken (or refused), and occasion-ally further information, e.g. whether signed or made mark, senior/junior, occupation, etc..

Send 5 pounds if you would like us to search the index for a specific individual and report the first ten entries for that surname as they appear (alphabetically) in the index. Additional entries can be reported at the rate of 50p each. For this service we also accept payment in British postage stamps.
